Free school holiday workshops and screening of a five-star, highly acclaimed performance, Archives of Humanity by co3 contemporary dance company
City of Karratha is excited to host Under the Same Sky bird making and contemporary dance workshops and Archives of Humanity performance screening, as part of the school holiday program, presented by co3 contemporary dance company through their regional touring.
Community members will be guided in a workshop to create a single bird made from a donated
piece of clothing. The finished bird can be kept by the maker or form part of a community installation
in your town. Participants will have the opportunity to record their story which can be shared in a
local exhibition or with Co3 to join the archives of the production.
All you need to bring is your garment (t-shirts or natural fibres work best) and your story of migration, isolation, or
community. The workshop is 3 ½ hours including a break. Suitable for beginner and advanced sewers. Open to
adults and children. Those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Workshops are inclusive and accessible to CALD
Communities and people of all backgrounds.
In February 2021, Co3 Contemporary Dance presented ARCHIVES OF HUMANITY at the State Theatre Centre of WA. Devised and directed by Artistic Director, Raewyn Hill and commissioned by Perth Festival, it celebrated community and explored ways individuals respond and care for each other in a crisis.
It featured an inter-generational cast of 21 dancers plus a remarkable set of over 1500 fabric birds hand-made by members of our WA community using their own recycled clothing. The creation of the set by community members was a concept developed by Raewyn Hill and Japanese sculptural artist Naoko Yoshimoto.
The intent was to collect from individuals their written stories reflecting the life of the garment, immigration and isolation during the evolving pandemic. The stories were then displayed on a wall for audiences to read as they entered the performance and the birds united, soared above as a collective symbol of endurance and hope.
Co3 is now excited to share this experience to Regional WA through their FREE touring program called UNDER THE SAME SKY.
The tour is made up of three key elements: bird making workshops, dance workshops and a public screening of ARCHIVES OF HUMANITY. Regional communities will have the opportunity to see this five-star, highly acclaimed world premiere production that captivated Perth audiences, and see how the birds formed an integral part of this new dance work.
